How To Boost Your Immune System
Having a healthy immune system is vital. We are all exposed to millions of viruses, bateria and other pathogens every day and it is your immune system that defends the body against these
to prevent or limit illness and disease.
There are a number of things you should do to boost your immune system. Important factors are:
- Get Adequate Sleep
Many people believe that 6-8 hours sleep per night is sufficient for their needs. In fact your immune system requires at least 8-10 hours for good health
- Eat A Balanced Diet
A balanced diet will contain the nutrients your body needs for a healthy immune system as well as adequate fibre. Fibre
is important because the body needs to keep the bowels moving in order to elimate waste effectively. If this fails to happen,
toxins will start to build up within the body. Vitamins and other nutrients can be supplemented (see below) but ultimately this will be more successful
if you are eating a balanced diet to begin with rather than tryring to offset a signficant deficiency
- Keep Active
Besides keeping your body more physically fit, being active helps to circulate lymphatic fluid which is a vital component of your immune system.
- Drink Water
In order for your lymphatic system to function well, you need plenty of fluids. 6 to 8 glasses of water per day is recommended to keep your body well hydrated.
- Have A Happy Outlook
Chemicals produced whien you laugh have been shown to have a beenficial effect on many of the cells in the body and the immune system is no exception.
We can't help you with these (although we can supply you with the raw materials you need to eat a balanced diet!) but to give your immune system a further boost, you should also take
the right supplements. Below are a number of supplements available which have been shown to boost your immune system in various ways. We supply all of them from our online store and if you
feel that after reading below you could benefit from any of them, just click on the picture or name to go to our online store and purchase them
Echinacea
 |
Echinacea is well known for having a range of beneficial effects on the immune system. It is particularly popular as a herbal remedy for avoiding colds or reducing their duration or severity but also provide a range of other benefits to the immune system.
- ANTI-VIRAL
Research has demonstrated that Echinacea reduces severity of cold symptoms, time between infections, and increased the speed of recovery
- ANTI-BACTERIAL
Echinacea exerts an anti-bacterial effect which been noted in both internal and external bacterial infections
- WOUND HEALING
Echinacea also stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans and fibroblast growth needed for wound healing
- IMMUNE STIMULANT
Echinacea provides a broad spectrum of effects on the immune system and appears to offer benefit for all infectious conditions

Astragalus
 |
Astragalus is less well known than Echinacea but as a herbal remedy, it is also effective at boosting the immune system with a broad range of effects. Astragalus is a tonic herb and exerts anti-stress effects helping to build energy, strengthen digestion, improve memory, learning, and resistance to disease
- IMMUNE SUPPORT
Astragalus has been shown to reduce the duration and severity of symptoms of the common cold as well as raise white blood cell counts
- ANTI-VIRAL
Astragalus has anti-viral properties and has been shown to inhibit the replication of coxsackie B-3 virus, shown to a causative factor in myocarditis.
- CELL PROTECTIVE
Astragalus appears particularly helpful in cases where the immune system has been damaged by chemicals or radiation e.g. chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- CARDIO SUPPORT
Astragalus increases cardiac output in patients with angina pectoris. It has also been found to alleviate chest distress and improve left-ventricular function
- LIVER AND KIDNEY PROTECTIVE
Extracts of astragalus have been shown to alleviate liver injury and has demonstrated positive effects in protecting the kidneys from acute renal injury.
- DIGESTIVE FUNCTION
Astragalus strengthens the movement and muscle tone in the intestine to increase overall gastro-intestinal function.

Zinc
 |
Zinc is found is in many parts of the body including muscles, include bone, skin, kidneys, liver, pancreas, retina and prostate. It plays an important role in boosting your immune system.
- IMMUNE FUNCTION
Zinc is involved in virtually every aspect of immunity. Zinc supplementation produced a significant restoration of serum thymulin (a hormone produced by the thymus gland). Typically, as we age the level of thymulin and other immune enhancing thymus hormones decrease. The reduction of these hormones leads to an impaired immune system.
- ANTI-VIRAL
Zinc like vitamin C, also possesses direct antiviral action. This includes antiviral activity against several viruses that cause the common cold. A double blind trial demonstrated lozenge's containing zinc significantly reduced the average duration of the common cold by seven days.
- ANTI INFLAMMATORY
Zinc possesses antioxidant effects and functions in the antioxidant, superoxide dismutase (SOD). Zinc levels are found reduced in-patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and several studies have used zinc in RA showing a therapeutic effect.

Vitamin C
 |
Vitamin C is widely known to have benefits for your immune system. Some of it's key benefits are:
- IMMUNE FUNCTION
Vitamin C is known to be a potent immune stimulating nutrient. It has been shown to inhibit viral replication and may reduce the severity of the common cold. Some evidence suggests that vitamin C may augment natural killer cell activity, which is important for the protection of tumour development
- ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION
Vitamin C performs many functions that may offer protection against cancer, including acting as an antioxidant and protecting cellular structures, including DNA, from damage
- CARDIOVASCULAR PROTECTION
A high dietary intake of vitamin C has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of death from heart attacks and strokes in numerous population studies.
- SKIN HEALTH V
itamin C is essential for the healthy production of collagen synthesis required for bone, skin, and tendon formation.
- DIABETES
Vitamin C has been shown to be beneficial in diabetic complications, including retinopathy and neuropathy.

Antioxidants
 |
Antioxidants are compounds that help protect against free radical damage. Antioxidant nutrients such as beta carotene,
selenium, vitamin E and C, are very important in helping protect against the development of chronic diseases associated with the
ageing process, such as; heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and diabetes. Current data suggests that a combination of antioxidants
will provide greater antioxidant protection than any single nutrient.
